Speaker Upgrade Part 1: Tweeters With
a set of new door panels with the Mach 460 tweeter pods installed, it
was time to make some noise, well, not quite. The Mach 460
speakers are not compatible with the Premium Sound system nor most
aftermarket system. Ford used a 2 OHM speaker for the Mach 460
system, while the Premium Sound system and most aftermarket systems
are 4 OHM. Did I just waste the money on the tweeter pods?
Fortunately, there's always a solution. Why not install
aftermarket tweeters in those pods? I took the pods to Custom
Sounds in San Antonio and they made a custom plate and fitted a pair
of Alpine SPS-1005 dome tweeters into the pod. The speaker wires
were spliced onto the factory plug. I then ran speaker wire from
the door speaker to the receiving socket on the tweeter pod.
Keeping the factory plug and socket intact allows for easy
disconnection and reconnection when needed.
