Before Pictures Awhile back
I changed the door panels and rear quarter trim panels from all tan to
two-toned tan/black. To do this I replaced the panels with
panels from a 96 GT, the last year Ford put the two-tone panels in the
Mustang. While the project was a success, tan just isn't my
color. What I really like is the all black interior. After
months of debate, I decided to go ahead with changing the color of
the interior to black. Replacing all the interior parts to
black would be just too expensive, so instead I will be painting most
of the parts.
The project involves painting 8 pieces including the rear quarter panels, center
console, steering column covers, steering wheel air bag, steering
wheel back plate, dashboard, and air vents. The parts will be painted using
black interior spray paint. The remaining tan pieces will be
replaced. The carpet will will be replaced with carpet
from a wrecked Mustang. The only thing left is the seats.
I've decided to get the FR500 seats to take care of that. The
FR500 seats are actually just extra padding and leather upholstery
that is fitted over the factory seats. The good thing about the
FR500 seats though, is that the kit includes reupholstering the back seat.
Step-by-Step
Step 1 - Removal
of the seats. The
seats will be removed and taken to an upholstery shop to have the
FR500 upholstery installed.
Step 2 - Removal of the
panels. The rear
quarter panels, door panels, door sills, glove compartment box, kick
panels, center console, steering wheel, steering column covers, vents,
and knee bolster panel will be removed. The steering wheel has
already been replaced with an FR500 steering wheel and only the airbag
and rear of steering wheel will need to be painted.
Step 3 - Removal of the
carpet. The carpet
will be removed and disposed of.
Step 4 - Prepping the
interior. Since
the dash will remain in the car for painting, the interior will be
masked to prevent overspray. Also the dash will be cleaned,
stripped, and lightly sanded.
Step 5 - Painting the
dash. Before
painting, any hard plastic will be primed using interior clear primer.
Soft plastic will not require priming. After the priming stage,
the dash will be painted with 3 coats of black interior paint and then
sealed with 2 coats of interior paint sealant.
Step 6 - Prepping the
removed parts.
During the drying stages of the dash, the parts that require painting will
be prepped.
Step 7 - Priming
and painting. Once
prepped the hard plastic parts will be primed, painted, and sealed in
the same fashion as the dash.
Step 8 - Dynamatting the
floor panels.
While the carpet is out, it is the opportune time to add some sound
insulation to the floor panels. Dynamat or a similar material
will be used.
Step 9 - Installing the
carpet. Once
everything is dry, masking will be removed and the carpet will be
installed.
Step 10 - Reinstalling
all removed parts.
Everything will be carefully reinstalled.
Step 11 - Installing the
seats. Hopefully,
the seats will be done by the time the interior is repainted.
Once the seats are picked up from the upholstery shop, they will be
installed and the project will be complete, well, after several hours
of ventilation to get the paint fumes out.
